Eco-friendly Stocking Stuffer Ideas

Posted by lindseyshoe

Consider these eco-friendly stocking stuffer ideas before you head out (or online) to do your holiday shopping!

“The stockings are hung by the chimney with care…”
Filling stockings can be both fun and challenging. Ironically, you don’t want to “stuff” the stocking with a bunch of “stuff” that no one needs, that’s bad for them, and bad for the environment too. This year you can make a commitment to choose eco-freindly stocking stuffers. Choose green stocking stuffers that really show you care about the recipients and the world we live in.
What stocking stuffer ideas should we avoid?
Say no to gizmos that are essentially useless, made of non-recyclable material, and may be around for centuries.
Say no to tiny items that are way over-packaged.
Say no to all products with toxic chemicals.
1. Green Candles
Candles are both practical and a treat. Stuff your stockings with local, handmade candles or soy candles that burn clean. Soy is also a sustainable resource. Popular candle brands emit toxins into the air.
2. Green Utensils
Who couldn’t use a new spatula, ladle, or spreader in the kitchen? Kitchen utensils are practical–and bamboo utensils are green too. Leave land-filling toxic plastic utensils that melt and never seem clean at the superstore.
3. Green Batteries & Chargers
Try as we might to use fewer batteries and use them less often, most of us still have several electronic products that require batteries. We may not be able to live battery-less, but we can certainly buy a battery charger and rechargeable batteries. A battery charger is a very practical and eco-friendly stocking stuffer.
4. Green Lights
Every stocking should come with a CFL bulb. This can be they year that your family changes over all of your inefficient incandescent light bulbs with energy saving CFL bulbs. They will last up to 10 times longer, so this is really an eco-friendly gift.
5. B.Y.O.B.
Everyone should have a water bottle of their own. A Sigg water bottle keeps cold water cold and hot drinks hot–and keeps tons of plastic water bottles out of the landfill. Permanent water bottles are a perfect fit for Christmas stockings and a great asset to living a green lifestyle.
6. Green Bath and Body Products
Have you read the labels on some of the popular brands of bath and body products? If you can’t pronounce or identify it, do you really want it in your hair, face, and body? Do you really want it washing down your drain and into the water supply? Look for bath and body products that use natural and organic ingredients that are better for you and the earth too.
7. Green Trees
The Arbor Day Foundation can make filling stockings really easy with individually packaged vials of Pine, Redwood, or Spruce saplings for only $3.00 each.
So maybe you can’t fill stockings with clean air and water, but you can fill them with green stocking stuffers that are more earth-friendly and healthy too. Whether your stockings are red, white, or gold, make sure that everything inside is green.
