Elmer’s Grass House

grass houseElmer is a member of the GreenJoyment community. He shared something with me about his grass house, and I wanted to share it with everyone here, because I found it to be a great example of going green.
We’re putting together a lot of resources about solar energy right now, and should have some interesting news to share soon.

Hello Jonathan,
I live in the province of Benguet in the Philippines. There is
a mountain region in northern Philippines Called the Cordilleras.
The Cordilleras is sub-divided into 5 provinces of which the province of
Benguet is one of them. We who live in these provinces are
called the Igorots. We are one of the poorest tribes in the
Philippines.
Seven months ago, I built myself a grasshouse. It is not
very expensive to build one as anyone can avail himself to
some materials that are really cheap. Grass (for the roofing)
is free, too, if you know where to look. Inside the grasshouse
is cool during hot summer days; it is warm during the night.
Now, that’s a green house, isn’t it? But I wish to make it
greener by practicing the principle of green living. I want
my night lights and cooking heat supplied by clean and renewable
source. Solar energy might will be the answer to this.
You know, even backward people will recognize what is good.
But you have to show them the goods. It won’t take long
for anyone to understand that green living is the better
alternative as it is cheap, healthy and – let me add – exciting.
