Going green with blue jeans: Insulation and Habitat for Humanity

Posted by Lisa Carey

Is it time for your spring cleaning? Maybe you lost weight as part of your New Year’s Resolution and now need to find a new purpose for your blue jeans (and maybe even save some money buying a new pair too?) Grab your jeans and make a run for the Gap – find out why and for how long.

Have you ever wondered what you could do with your old jeans? There are many crafts and home décor items I am aware of but for a limited time in March you can actually turn blue into green, a green that’s good for the environment and good for Habitat for Humanity.
The process is simple and can help so many.
1. Gather up your old jeans.
2. Take them to a Gap store near you. There are approximately 1000 stores participating. You can find a store location here.
3. The Gap Store gives you a coupon for 30% off your purchase.
4. The used jeans are made to create Bonded UltraTouch Natural Cotton Fiber insulation. This insulation is chemical free and requires no warning labels. There are no VOC concerns when using UltraTouch, and it is a Class-A Building Product and meets the highest ASTM testing standards for fire and smoke ratings, fungi resistance and corrosiveness. This insulation is made from 85% post-industrial recycled natural fibers making it a high quality sustainable building material.
5. Habitat for Humanity then uses this sustainable and healthy insulation in the homes they are building in many Gulf coast homes.

This project has helped approximately 180 homes in the Gulf Coast to assist with recovery efforts due to Hurricane Katrina, since it beginning in 2006 and has helped over 540 homes. It is available for sale, and while it is more expensive than other insulation anyone can install it without any special equipment or materials.
Gap’s Blue to Green program is available for a limited time, March 5-14 at all Gap, GapKids or babyGap stores. So get mean, get your closets cleaned and turn some blue into green to help Habitat for Humanity.
