How to Keep Your Car Environment Friendly

Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States and an active participant of the environmental activist movement for a number of decades, once said that “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” It is important that we make a concerted effort to protect our environment and work towards keeping our world healthy.

Now there are approximately 750 million motor cars in the world. Pollution by vehicles is a major problem as they spread high amounts of sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, lead and nitrates in the air. The smoke coming from the engines contains ozone and other harmful particles released from road dust and tire fragmentation. Looking on these critical situations, we as responsible residents of the universe must know how to take care of our cars and keep them environment-friendly.

Here are some things to take note of:

1. Dispose car wastes as necessary
You can save on fuel consumption by getting rid of the wastes in your car. Properly dispose motor oil, antifreeze, lead-acid batteries and other components associated with routine automobile upkeep. Remember: less weight, less waste.

2. Don’t leave your car running when idle
According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Stationary vehicles are the largest source of unintentional, non-fire related fatalities.” Today’s vehicles are designed to “warm up” fast, wasting more gas if left idle, degrading the engine’s performance and reducing mileage. So while waiting for other passengers to get into the car, it is recommended to shut the car’s engine off.

3. Check your tire pressure
Your tires’ air pressure affects your car’s fuel consumption. For instance, if the tires are under-inflated, your engine has to work harder to push and consumes more fuel to move the vehicle forward. This will build up more internal heat, increase rolling resistance (causing a reduction in fuel economy of up to 5%) and reduce the tire’s tread life by as much as 25%. Aside from these, improper tire air pressure also raises the chances of road accidents.

Car Pollution4. Observe car’s preventive maintenance schedule

A well-maintained car emits lesser pollution. Review your car’s manual for suggested maintenance schedule for oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks and tune-ups. Additionally, for a more organized scheduling, you can mark your calendars and set the first day of each month as a reminder date for checking washer fluid levels, tire pressure and wear patterns.

Moderate your desire for speed and observe road limits. Note that mileage decreases sharply above 55 mph. Avoid sudden accelerations. Use cruise-control on open highways to keep your speed as steady as possible5. Drive efficiently

Minor changes can play a huge part in maintaining the well-being of the environment that we live in. Nature has been taking the brunt of our selfish acts and it is time to start taking care of it. Rise up and be part. Take care of mother earth and it will take care of you.
