How To Make A Pizza Box Solar Cooker: Solar Cooker Week #4

Posted by carrie_roll

In our fourth cooker for this week, we show you how to make a solar cooker out of a pizza box. It’s relatively simple really, (as long as you get that cheese and grease out of the inside of your pizza box).
This was a really fascinating and simple solar cooker to make, although I’m not sure just yet what we’re going to cook in this box. It’s kinda little.
Maybe we would use it to bake cookies.
(Actually, you’ll see later today how we used this to make eggplant parmesean, with surprising results.
Hope you enjoy the video and learn how to make a pizza box solar cooker for yourself!

You will need:

  • A medium size pizza box (Pizza Hut boxes work great)
  • Black construction paper
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic (plastic window covering from a hardware store works best)
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional)
  1. Tape or glue the aluminum foil to the inside bottom of the box. Cover the foil with black paper (This is the step we missed). Tape in place.
  2. Put the box on the plastic. Draw the outline of the box on the plastic with the marker. Cut the plastic about 1/4 inch inside the marks.
  3. On the top of the box, draw a line one inch from all sides. Cut along front and side lines BUT NOT along the back. This will be the hinge for the flap. Carefully fold open the flap.
  4. Cut a piece of foil the size of the flap. Glue it to the side of the flap that faces INTO the box. Flatten out all the winkles. Wipe glue smears off with a damp towel before they dry.
  5. Tape the plastic to the inside of the box. Tape one side first, then the opposite side. Make it tight so it looks like glass. Tape the other edges. Seal tight so no air can get in.
  6. Cut a piece of string as long as the box. Tape one end to the top of the flap. Push a small nail into the back of the pizza box so you have a place to tie the string. (We used a stick to prop it open instead, but the string method will work too.)

  • Great post, I also started a blog which is targeted on making pizza and I was just searching for other similar blogs.

I actually didn’t copy the kids… just the text they posted on their web site because they did such a great job with it.
If you watch the video, you’ll see that I would have done a lot better if I HAD actually copied the kids. I am happy you posted the link here. Thank-you!
Hopefully people will learn from both what I did wrong and what the kids did right!
I definitely should have used the plastic that they recommended (instead of the plastic wrap I used) and the string probably would have worked better for holding open the pizza box than my little wire hanger.
Also, the inside of the box should have been black, I should have used a black pan, and mylar would have been better than aluminum foil.
Live and learn I guess! I’ll make a better one next time.
Thanks again for posting the link!
