NovaTorque: A Greener More Gentle Electric Motor
Posted by lindseyshoe
Many people may not realize that electric motors account for almost half of all the electricity used in our modern society. John Petro, founder of NovaTorque did realize this about electric motors. Mr. Petro has found a way to reduce energy consumption with a new kind of electric motor. Read more to find out about this interesting, energy efficient, and money saving new electric motor.
Everyone who gets an electricity bill these days has to care about the cost of electricity and more and more people are recognizing not just the cost from their bank accounts but the cost to the environment of using electricity as well. Eco-friendly remedies can run from the obvious and easy to like reducing the use of appliances, turning off the lights, switching over to more energy efficient CFL light bulbs to the highly committed like using solar or wind to power to reduce electricity dependency.
John Petro, founder of NovaTorque, decided that there was another way to reduce energy consumption- by making green improvements on the electric motor. Many people may not realize that electric motors account for almost half of all the electricity used in our modern society. We don’t often see them and out of sight can mean out of mind but electric motors power everything in homes from robotic toys, to dishwashers, to air conditioning units. Electric motors are used exponentially in the industrial sector where they power a spectrum of products from industrial pumps to factory automation systems.
Although the motor was conceived in 2003, Petro didn’t have the funds to develop it at the time. Despite the eco-friendly benefits of the patented electric motor technology, Petro found that venture capitalists didn’t seem to understand the clean tech breakthrough.
Petro shared that “the motor industry is not something the venture-capital industry is interested in. They will fund the 23rd solar company before they will fund a motor company.” But earlier this year Petro finally found investors who “got it” and manufacturing is on the horizon.
What makes the new NovaTorque electric motor greener than traditional electric motors?
- The design requires 40% less steel.
- The design requires only have as much copper wiring.
- It is 10-30% more efficient.
The massive energy savings has been equated to a power plant’s worth.
The fundamental changes that reduced materials and electrical usage included replacing the cylindrical magnets with conical ones that are both lighter and smaller.
What is the potential savings to the environment and consumers if these new, more energy efficient electric motors are adopted widespread?
- Reducing energy usage will reduce greenhouse-gas emissions responsible for global warming potentially by over 1 billion tons annually.
- Efficiency reduces national energy dependence.
- Helps families and businesses save on their utility bills.
With all of the potential benefits, why haven’t appliance manufacturers jump on the bandwagon to use more energy efficient electric motors in the past?
The usual reason: cost. Manufacturers have generally used the least expensive motors that will work effectively to power appliances. It keeps the costs of the appliance down and the profits up. And after all, is it really their concern how much it costs consumers to use the product once they purchase it?
Now NovaTorque claims that they can provide these improved electric motors at little or no additional cost and they also claim their development of the innovative motor structure has not only greater efficiency but also provides higher torque in a smaller size, better thermal performance, and of course competitive manufacturing costs.
Breakthroughs in the clean tech field are exciting for consumers who want to save money while operating and enjoying the conveniences of home appliances, but also care about the ultimate home that we all share, Mother Earth.

I have heard that in a constant state of repulsion the magnets wear out very quickly.
Is this true?
Ya but what about hydrogen cars they have been out for 9 years now
