Peat Pots for Potted Plants

Posted by carrie_roll

Peat Moss is a family of wild growing mosses of the Sphagnum kind or family of mosses (as it is scientifically known). Peat Moss, as used in gardening, is a fibrous, decomposed remains of these certain types of moss, which are found in very wet areas of the country. It is a highly prized natural plant food and can be used as a covering or mulch like substance for seeded areas.

Peat pots are an excellent and biodegradable way to start seeds. When it’s time to transplant any plant (in our case here a tomato plant), all you have to do is set the pot and the plant inside of it into the soil. Generally speaking, peat pots are made of peat moss and wood fiber, and frequently have soluble fertilizer added to help plants grow. (Depending on where you buy your plants may determine what kind of fertilizer is used in making the peat pots.)
Now, if you’re interested, you might want to know where you can get Peat Moss?
Your local farm supply, outdoor or gardening section of most department stores will have a healthy store of Peat Moss for sale through the planting season. Some stores only have peat moss at the beginning of planting season, namely the spring and early summer. You may also be fortunate enough to find Peat Moss out in wet wilderness areas such as found in Pennsylvania. There you may find Peat Moss available in large bogs though you will certainly want to have permission from property owners or the local government before digging up peat moss and taking it to either make your own pots or fertilize your garden.

Thank you Jonathan for all the information you share with us. It’s invaluable. I hope more people will at least attempt to go greener than they currently are.
