Solar Cooker Week

Posted by carrie_roll

As you may have read in this post, next Saturday is my birthday.
Thanks to those of you who have contributed to this most worthwhile cause! (If you would still like to donate to (or just find out about the BornInSeptember water project – building clean water wells in Ethiopia), go here to read the post.
In some cultures around the world, it’s polite to give gifts to others on your birthday. So, in honor of my birthday, we’ll be giving you a gift every day next week.
Carrie and I have designated next week as solar cooker week here on GreenJoyment!
What does that mean? Well, Monday-Thursday next week, we’re going to post 1 video/day. Each video will teach you how to make a different kind of solar cooker.
Then, on Friday, we are going to compare the results we get when we cook the same food, side-by-side, in the different solar cookers, so that you will know which solar cooker is the best!
(Now that I’ve committed to that, I’m realizing I should check the weather forecast! – However, I’m confident that the weather will cooperate with us.)

So, we have a request for you:
What do you think we should cook?
Remember, food cooked in a solar cooker should be the kind of food that you can cook in a crock pot, so take that into account when you’re suggesting different kinds of foods!
Who knows, we may just take your suggestion and put it in one of the videos next week!
What would you like to see us cook in a solar cooker?

Great idea! my suggestions are that you could cook bread pudding or custard, pumpkin soup or minestrone, or a chinese tofu pot. or maybe if you like meat, a lobster bisque :) good luck and happy birthday!!

  • Hi Jessica,
GREAT suggestions! I LOVE bread pudding. We’ll have to give that one a shot at some point!
A lobster bisque also sounds very yummy… Carrie’s allergic to shellfish though, so that one might be saved for a tim when it’s just me, or me and some friends.
Thanks for the suggestions! What does everyone else suggest?

How about cooking chili con carne. rice pudding is a good one, i have also cooked ham but you do have to cut it up and make sure it is covered.
I am hoping you are going to teach us how to make the solar cookers as well.

Thanks for the suggestions as well. I like rice pudding a lot. Got any favorite recipes for rice pudding that we could try in the cookers?
    Warmest,
    Jonathan

I’ve been wanting to try a solar cooker, but there seems to be a multitued of designs. This should help people like me to decide and do something. I think chili would be a good general test.
I was looking for a recipe to make Pear Butter, and found a simple method using a crock pot, maybe the solar cooker could be used for preparing something for canning as this is the season.
