Since its introduction in 1912, NaBisCo’s Oreo cookie has becoming the best selling cookie of the 20th century in the U.S. This classic snack – crème smeared between two chocolate discs – is a childhood classic. But despite its popularity in numbers – more than 362 billion Oreos have been sold since 1912 – the cookie isn’t winning friends among health enthusiasts.

Simran Sethi (University of Kansas professor, all-around green star, and way-back-in-the-day TreeHugger TV alum) has a new talk from TEDx Cibeles that’s more than worth the next 26 minutes and 17 seconds of your time.

Titled “Why and how do we engage?” it covers a lot of ground, as the title hints at, but there’s one particular theme that I think really deserves a careful listen, re-listen, re-re-listen, and then some contemplation. Making your own cosmetic products at home has many benefits:

It can save you money.
It’s all natural, and allows you to avoid pthalates.

We recently stumbled on a site called Superuse which catalogs and promotes the idea of transforming waste into something useful or beautiful. Not all of the ideas on this site are fine art, but they’re certainly all great ideas for reusing materials to reduce waste. While we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of all these clever innovations on the site, there are pages upon pages of amazing ideas — like this reused CD spindle that makes for the perfect instant lunchbox for a bagel sandwich! Simply brilliant. You can see more of our favorite ideas for reuse after the jump!
